Alongside Ventana Controller mode, support has been added for a PPPoE client service. This service is setup under the Node configuration, Services. Enter the Username, Password, a custom MTU and whether this PPPoE interface becomes the default route (the usual case for a Controller with a PPPoE backhaul).
When this service is enabled for a Controller, firewall rules are automatically added to 1) allow traffic out the “pppoe” interface and 2) “clamp” user TCP sessions to the pppoe tunnel MTU. MTU clamping fixes issues with TCP traffic over PPPoE tunnels. Also added are monitoring rules to check the PPPoE service and alert, repair service, if it errors.
A common Use-Case for PPPoE is when a Controller is connected to an ADSL/VDSL modem setup in Bridge mode. In this case, the Controller obtains the Public IP address of the DSL connection and thus improves traffic flows due to the environment only requiring a single NAT - double-NAT issues can subsequently be avoided.
